About Lydford Gorge Devil's Cauldron Trail

A short but intense gorge walk to the roaring Devil's Cauldron pothole and viewing platform. Distance: 0.8 miles (1.28 km). Typical route time: about 40 minutes. Difficulty/terrain: Moderate; narrow rocky paths, steep gradients, rugged steps and slippery surfaces. On 17 September 2026 the Devil's Cauldron Trail was listed open 10:00–16:30. The trail closes for the winter from 2 November 2026 until spring 2027. The 2026 rock-face movement identified above the trail was made safe before opening; same-day safety closures remain possible. Dogs must be on a short lead and out of the river; the National Trust advises against taking dogs onto the viewing platform. Start at the Devil's Cauldron entrance, Lydford Gorge, EX20 4BH (SX508844). Managed National Trust car park; check opening/admission details before travel. National Trust members have free entry; non-member admission applies. Check current admission prices before travelling. Narrow wet rock and steep steps can be slippery. Do not use closed side paths or enter the river.
